Do you know what February 12 is? It's the first day of the Lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year. 2021 is the Year of the Ox, beginning February 12 and lasting until January 31, 2022. If you didn’t know, 2020 was the Year of the Rat, who, in Chinese mythology, became the first animal in the order of the zodiac by way of deceit. The story goes, the Jade Emperor told all the animals that whichever animal was first to his party would be the first animal in the zodiac order. Diligent and hardworking, the Ox left for the party early to be sure to be the first to arrive. On his journey, he came upon the Rat, who asked for a ride. Being a kind and gentle creature, Ox agreed to let Rat ride on his back. Just as they arrived at the party, Rat jumped off Ox’s back and ran to be first in line. And so the Ox became the second animal to arrive, and therefore the second animal out of twelve in the zodiac.
Unfair? Maybe. But if you feel like you were cheated by the Rat Year 2020 (and who doesn't?), then the Year of the Ox may be just what the doctor ordered. In the Chinese Zodiac, the Ox personifies diligence, patience, and humility, and the Year of the Ox promises to bring good luck and good harvest. Who couldn’t use some good luck right about now?
