Cooking for Your Corgi: Game Day Edition

The calendar has flipped from summer to autumn, there's a chill in the air, and pumpkin spice everything is in full effect. It can only mean one thing: football season is here, and with it all the nachos and wings you can shove in your face!

Since your Corgi is such a big part of your life, why not include them in your game day menu planning? They can't have buffalo wings or guacamole (avocado is toxic to dogs), but we've got healthy alternatives you can cook up for your Corgi that are sure to please. Welcome to Cooking for Your Corgi: Game Day Edition!

[Remember, always consult your veterinarian before giving new foods to your pet, and do not overfeed.]

Healthy Dog Stew:  Create this hearty stew by combining freshly ground turkey, yams, steel cut oats, spinach, and green peas. This stew freezes well, allowing your pup to enjoy this delicious dish more than once!

Ingredients:

3 lbs. ground turkey (We prefer the 15% fat / 85% lean turkey)

3 large yams (aka Sweet Potatoes)

¾ to 1 cup of steel cut oats

1lb spinach (fresh or frozen)

1lb green peas (fresh or frozen)

Directions:

  1. Wash the yams and chop into medium sized chunks (the smaller the chunks, the faster the stew will be ready). Place the yams in a large non-stick pot and cover with water (you should have about two inches of water on top of the yams).
  2. Bring to a boil (uncovered) and continue to let yams boil until they start to become soft. Once the yams become soft, add the steel cut oats.  Let yams and oats cook for about 20 more minutes. When the yams and oats are almost cooked, add in the turkey.  Mix well with the yams and oats until all the turkey is covered and starts to cook. Let the turkey cook for about five minutes.
  3. Add in peas and spinach and mix well. The spinach and peas should cook very quickly (don’t overcook or they will lose nutritional value).
  4. Cool and serve!  If you want, you can portion out the stew into several containers and freeze.

Grain Free Peanut Butter Dog Cookies:  This easy three ingredient recipe comes courtesy of K-9 Instinct.

Ingredients:

1 cup of coconut flour

1 cup of all natural peanut butter

4 eggs

Directions:

  1. Combine coconut flour, peanut butter, and eggs in a mixing bowl.
  2. Mix thoroughly.
  3. Shape into 1-inch balls or roll out and cut shapes with a cookie cutter.
  4. Bake in the oven at 350 degrees F for 17-20 minutes.
  5. Store in the refrigerator or freeze.

We hope you and your Corgi enjoy these delicious treats. Remember to get outside for an exercise break at halftime so your Corgi doesn’t look like a linebacker by the end of the season!
